Register.com first opened for business as a domain registrar in 1994 under the name Forman Interactive. The name change to Register.com took place in 1999. Today, Register.com offers accredited domain registration, email, and Unix and Windows-based web hosting packages.

Sales

Sales support is offered by phone or live chat with Register.com. I was able to connect with a real, live salesperson less than one minute after placing a call to their toll-free telephone number. The rep I visited with was polite, witty and a pleasure to work with. Perfect!

Setup

Register.com requires you fill out an online registration form when signing up for a new account. The process is easily accomplished in five minutes or less. Once I paid for my account, I had an invoice and a welcome letter in my email inbox within the hour.

Billing

My web hosting account was billed and paid for on a monthly basis. I had no trouble with the billing department during my one year stay or when cancelling my account.

Pricing

Register.com has three different hosting packages available, the cheapest of which affords users 5 gigabytes of space and 250 gigabytes of bandwidth for $14.95/month. (Pay by the year and you’ll be charged only $11.95/month.) Register.com is markedly more expensive than many hosts out there today, but they do offer a few free bonuses, such as a domain name and IP address. Even with the freebies, Register.com comes up on the pricey side.

Reliability

I had no server hardware issues that presented during my one year stay.

Support with Register.com can be had by live chat or telephone. Register.com boasts multiple J.D. Power and Associates Call Center awards and lives up to their reputation for offering fast, efficient support. Whether by live chat or phone, Regsiter.com quickly answered all questions I presented and, when one rep didn’t have an answer for me, they immediately found someone who could assist me. My only complaint here is that live chat wait times can be as long as twenty minutes on weekends or afternoons.

Uptime

I have a premium uptime monitor in place to keep track of my domains. According to that monitor, my website did not stay online 100% of the time, as promised. My email server also conked out semi-regularly for the first three months. I was credited with a refund for the downtime with the web hosting server, but not for email server downtime. The average uptime for Register.com during my first six months was 99.8%, and that improved to near 100% uptime for the rest of my stay.
