iWeb - From the company

iWeb has been providing reliable and scalable Internet hosting infrastructure solutions with its shared web hosting, dedicated servers, managed hosting and colocation services for over a decade.

Founded by Martin Leclair and Eric Chouinard in October 1996 and headquartered in Montreal since 1998, the public company (TSX-V: IWB) has enjoyed a steady growth since its inception, currently employing more than 170 talented hosting specialists and operating three data centers in the greater Montreal area.

At the beginning, iWeb originally operated under the "Formation et Technologies Formatek" name. It started as a general Internet related services company to later focus on Web Hosting. It is in 1998 and 1999, as a result of mergers and partnerships with SMEs specializing in Internet solutions (Formatek, Infonet Services, WebDépart and JBCréation), that iWeb reoriented itself towards Internet hosting and server management to make it its specialty.

Operating in the heart of the Old Montreal from 2000 to 2004, close to the Multimedia City, iWeb survived the dot com bubble burst and was growing beyond all expectations. At the end of 2003, in addition to signing an agreement to enter the stock market, iWeb acquired a 10,000 square foot building and moved its headquarters into its spacious new office. Only two years later, after the acquisition of the Hosting Division of iNet-Interactif/Funio, in February of 2006, iWeb acquired a new 20,000 square foot building and built its second datacenter in St-Leonard on the Island of Montreal. In October 2007, iWeb announced the opening of a third data center of 29,000 square feet, in Nuns' Island near Montreal.

Today iWeb is one of the largest web hosts and Internet hosting infrastructures provider in Canada. iWeb's operations centres shelter a total of more than 59,000 square feet of latest generation data center and office floor space in Montreal and offers a wide variety of first class web hosting and server management services. IWeb is recognized for the quality of its customer service and its highly competitive prices.

Review:
After using the dedicated hosting services of IWEBB, I would definitely recommend not using their services. My business used their level 5 server plan and discovered a number of ongoing issues from the get go. Our server was slow and often went down. We made several requests to IWEBB, to correct them. The service was about a three week turn around. Then in April, I discovered our server had crashed once again, not unusual. We began the routine of calling, emailing, and their tech support. I was finally, after two days of being completely down, told that a drive had failed and it would be replaced. Another day went by no server, no answer. I waited 3 hours on the phone to be told that our data was lost and they had to put us on a new server. There was no recent backup which was a part of my service plan. I was outraged that my business programs and database were lost. I asked to speak to customer service and the response I was given was even more outrageous. I was told that because I was a small company, I needed to relax and they would get to it when they had time. The rep then passed me back and forth through various departments. I was told that the drives would be sent out to have the data recovered. I then followed up 2 days later to discover this had not been completed. Once again, I was sent through various channels. I have still not recovered the data and I have had to send home 37 employees. Also, lost revenues are well over $ 850,000. I hope no one has to live this nightmare again. This is also a good example of buyer beware. Just to add salt to the wound I was given an estimate of $5300 dollars to recover data from their damaged hardware a week and a half after they said they would take care of it. I cancelled my services and they refused to return the data.

Review:

Well...I've used both iWeb and Peer1, but Peer1 for colo and iWeb for dedicated.

Both companies have good network and good tech support, but iWeb was a pain in the ass to get started with. I had to fax the authorization form numerous times before they got it, finally they did and the sales weren't all that helpful. But Martin, one of their owners, assures that the sales team have been revamped and it was all good.

Unfortunately I haven't had the pleasure to try them again.

Peer1 sign up went smooth as well as cancellation, but we had to cancel is due to price as their 1/4 cab was $900/mo with 5mbps bandwidth and 5 amps power. Sure, they are in NYC but jeez.

Bottom Line

I would say Peer1 is good with: 2- Technical Support 3- Reliability & uptime

iWeb is good with: 1- Value for money 2- Technical Support 3- Reliability & uptime

I'm sure iWeb sales have improved so give them a shout I'm sure you wont be disappointed.

I have so mixed emotions toward iWeb, I give the hardware/pricing 5 stars. I am not even sure if there is any other company come close in this area. Now, when it comes to the support/communication they are LOOOOOOSERS. Every time I intend to contact them it become like a nightmare , really bad. I am not sure why they don not even have the minimum communication skills. Overall , I love their hosting plan so much but if their communication does not get better i will for sure be looking for new hosting plan.
