Review

Sales

Hostway handles sales questions via standard email, live chat and a toll-free telephone number. I utilized all three forms of communication. I was able to get in touch with a human sales representative by phone and live chat in less than five minutes. The salespeople were friendly, easy to understand and eager to answer my questions. I didn’t have the same luck with the email sales department, never actually receiving an answer to any of my questions proposed.

Setup

The ordering of my shared web hosting account was simple, taking less than ten minutes of my time. I had a confirmation by email within 30 minutes telling me that I’d purchased a plan and promising that my account details would be along shortly. Within 90 minutes of paying, my account was setup and ready to use. The email I received welcoming me to the Hostway team included my login username, temporary password and instructions and links to get my website up and running.

Billing

I chose a monthly hosting plan and my credit card was billed automatically at the same time each month. I received additional charges on my first bill for an IP address I had not ordered, and immediately called the toll free telephone number to straighten out the problem. Unlike the sales department, getting in touch with the billing department at Hostway involved a slow wait. One hour after initially dialing Hostway, I was still on-hold. The billing error was eventually sorted out and I’ve had no further trouble.

Pricing

Hostway’s shared hosting plans start at $13.95/month for 100 gigabytes of space and an unlimited amount of bandwidth. All Hostway’s packages offer a tremendous amount of resources and their prices are certainly within the range of average.

Reliability

My website stayed consistently online while I was using Hostway’s services, though the speed at times was quite slow. I sent an email off to support to inquire about the issue and eight hours later received a response stating that my ticket was being elevated in status to “level two.” I never heard back from Hostway again.

Support

The level of support I received from the Hostway staff varied greatly and seemed to depend largely on what time of day I phoned. On average, I waited from 45 minutes to over an hour to get a tech on the line. Once in contact with someone from Hostway, my issues were generally resolved within just a few moments.

Email support is hit or miss at Hostway. To this day I’ve never gotten an actual response to my email questions, only notifications that my ticket status was being upgraded.

Live chat support is not available, except in the sales department.
