Review

Sales

Sales support from HostMonster can be had by telephone or a trouble ticket system. I picked up the phone to learn more about HostMonster, and was surprised to get a representative on the line in less than two minutes. For a company of this size, that’s almost unheard of. The rep I spoke with was bright, helpful and polite without being pushy or trying to make a sale. Great first impression!

Setup

The account sign-up process takes about three minutes and is as easy as filling out an online form and choosing a domain name. Once I’d paid for my account, I had a welcome email within moments, and all the necessary details I needed to get my domain online. Very smooth!

Billing

HostMonster accepts all major credit cards and billing questions can be taken up by phone or trouble ticket. I had no difficulty paying for my account, though I had some trouble cancelling. After staying with HostMonster for one year, I tried to opt out of my contract, and was repeatedly billed for two months after cancellation. HostMonster did eventually correct the problem and credit my card, though it took several phone calls with many different agents.

Pricing

HostMonster offers two plans: their basic unlimited everything plan for $5.95 a month (if paying three years in advance) or the Pro plan, which runs $19.95 per month. The unlimited plan is a steal, even when choosing a different pre-pay option, but the Pro plan—which guarantees a faster server with more hosting options—is sketchy. HostMonster doesn’t go out of their way to explain much about the Pro plan, and that makes the $19.95 per month plan seem like a bit of a rip-off.

Reliability

My yearlong stay with HostMonster was mostly reliable. The hard drive on my first server failed one month into my stay, something that isn’t completely uncommon, and about three months in I was moved to an entirely different server due to recurrent problems. Aside from those hardware glitches, I found HostMonster to be dependable.

Support

I had to contact the support department right off the bat when I was unable to get Wordpress installed via HostMonster’s cPanel control panel. Each and every time I tried, cPanel would produce an error. HostMonster support is available by phone and a trouble ticket system. I got in touch with the company through their online help center. Though they responded within 24-hours, they were unable to help me, saying that they didn’t support third-party software manual installs. I tried repeatedly to explain that I wasn’t installing Wordpress manually, but through their control panel, but it was of no use. I received the same stock answer every single time and eventually, ironically, I needed to perform a manual install since the cPanel installation module was malfunctioning.

I contacted support three other times during my stay with HostMonster. To their credit, support is quick by phone, but unfortunately, not always helpful. I got the feeling that some of the employees had never hosted a website themselves, and weren’t very confident with the answers they were giving me. To their credit, phone support takes just a few moments and trouble tickets are guaranteed to be answered within one day.

Uptime

My premium uptime monitor indicated that HostMonster not only met their 99.9% uptime guarantee, but exceeded it. With the exception of the hardware difficulties listed above, I didn’t experience any major (or minor) outages.

Review:
I have been with Hostmonster for about two years, and yes, some of the bad stuff I read here is true, but overall, still my choice, I just re-upped today. When I signed up, there were no short term options, and my initial rate was $5.95mo 12 months, which each year has gone up a dollar. They have also gotten a bit weird on file count. They shut me down a couple of times too, but, a quick phone call fixed it, and it was explained why. I understand that they oversell, and when you actually use what they have sold you, you take up more space than they would like, oh well. The service is the reason I am staying, when I call, I get help within minutes. I am setting up a reseller account with HostGator, but my sites will stay at HostMonster so I don't use up all of the space and have nothing left to sell. There are other things that I have there, that the others do not, so, I am happy, HostMonster is my choice, I just wish they had a reseller program.
