Downtownhost operates three separate divisions which include shared hosting, virtual private servers, and reseller hosting.

Downtownhost was founded in 2001 as a basic shared hosting provider. Today, just over nine years later, Downtownhost is responsible for more than 15, 000 websites, and operates servers from the Denver Technological Center in Denver, CO.

Review

Sales

I inquired about a shared web hosting plan with Downtownhost’s sales department. Downtownhost allows customers and potential clients to get in touch with them by email, an online help desk, live chat, online forum and via a toll free telephone number. I used both the phone and email. I had a speedy answer to my initial questions by email, with the response arriving in my Inbox less than five minutes after I’d sent it. Impressive! It took approximately one minute for me to reach an actual sales agent by phone. Both the email and telephone sales teams were knowledgeable, thorough and answered all of my questions with ease.

Setup

It took a little less than ten minutes to sign up for web hosting online with Downtownhost. The process was simple and straightforward. A few moments after I became a customer of Downtownhost I received a detailed welcome letter in my email program and ten minutes after that, I had my new account login, password and domain details. Setup was fast and the introductory letter gave me all the information I needed to get my website online that day.

Billing

I purchased a shared web hosting account and chose to be billed on a month to month basis. My credit card was charged on the same day each month without issue, and I never incurred any charges or fees that I had not agreed to.

Pricing

The smallest shared web hosting package from Downtownhost is called Shared Bronze and costs $15.95/month for 10gb of space and 200gb bandwidth. (There are options to save money by purchasing a hosting package for one, two and three year terms, plus a smaller blog hosting package that runs $5.95/month.) Downtownhost is slightly more expensive than other hosts offering the same set of features and services.

Reliability

A few days after my hosting account was started, I received an email notification that Downtownhost was upgrading their server hardware and I could expect a short amount of downtime while the new machinery was put into place. My website was offline for a brief period, as expected, but then experienced hiccups for the next several days as Downtownhost dealt with a database issue. According to Downtownhost, a server had been overloaded and that was the cause of the trouble, which disappeared for good about 48 hours later.

Support

Downtownhost has one of the best support teams I’ve ever worked with. As a rule, I knew that I could expect an almost immediate answer to any question I had, and the staff was always courteous when assisting me and well acquainted with what they were doing.

Uptime

My premium uptime monitoring tool confirmed that Downtownhost was never offline, nor were my websites. (Excluding the pre planned hardware upgrade.) My websites stayed online and always loaded quickly and thoroughly.
