It’s been three and half years since Google invested $100 million into the acquisition of FeedBurner.  Back then, FeedBurner was the RSS management tool of choice for most webmasters and then things quickly changed with the invention and implementation of real-time stats software, leaving former FeedBurner advocates scrambling for more up-to-date options.  This week, Google jumped back into the ring by giving Google FeedBurner a facelift.

New FeedBurner

FeedBurner’s major upgrade now gives real time stats for:

  • Clicks
  • Views
  • Podcast downloads

For end users, this means you’ll now start seeing what content is drawing traffic from feed readers, Twitter, and other syndicated sources as it happens.  For example, if you’re using the FeedBurner Socialize service tools and have implemented  PubSubHubbub or you ping Google when you add a new post to your website, you’ll be able to see within seconds  how much traffic your feed items are getting from Twitter and other feed reading platforms all in one place.

Want to try it out?  The easiest way to see real time stats in action is to publish a new post and then switch your FeedBurner view to “Last two hours.”  You’ll immediately be able to view updates as they happen.

The new Google Feedburner interface can be accessed by all those with FeedBurner account by clicking on the “Try out the NEW (beta) version” link at the top of your FeedBurner account page of by going directly to the new beta Google FeedBurner page.
